What is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a structured, evidence-based treatment designed specifically for OCD. It focuses on helping you face the thoughts, situations, or feelings that trigger anxiety, without relying on compulsions to get relief.
Why it helps
OCD works by creating a loop. A thought shows up, it creates anxiety, and then you do something to try to feel better. That relief doesn’t last, and the cycle keeps going.
ERP helps break that cycle. Instead of trying to get rid of the thought, you learn how to respond differently to it. Over time, your brain stops treating the thought as something urgent or dangerous.
When ERP is helpful
ERP is especially effective if you are dealing with:
OCD (any subtype, including intrusive thoughts)
Repetitive checking, reassurance seeking, or mental reviewing
Avoidance driven by fear or uncertainty
Feeling stuck in cycles you can’t seem to break
ERP is the gold standard treatment for OCD, and it can make a significant difference when applied consistently.
